I think it is likely that it did come from that tree. Different trees grow their roots in different patterns. Some grow mostly horizontal and shallow roots (20-30 feet and more). Others grow more vertical root systems. Soil compaction and water levels affect root growth as well.
Boy, my hubby is a smarty-pants!!! I would have said no, it came from another tree and how odd! 🙂 -S
