Three sentence movie reviews: The Incredible Hulk

I liked Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, it worked for me though I know others were not so happy with his performance.  I can never decide if Liv Tyler is a good actress or if I just like her so much I’m happy to watch her no matter her acting ability.  Overall, not a bad way to spend an evening.

Nice poster.

Three sentence movie reviews: The Prince and the Showgirl

I rented (meaning I got it from the library) this because the movie My Week with Marilyn is based on the experience of one of the crew of this production.  While I found My Week with Marilyn a bit trying, I greatly enjoyed this frippery of a tale.  Monroe’s comedic talents were on display and I liked how smart the “dumb blonde” was.

Note that there is no red dress in the movie. She wears the same white one for the entire film.

Three sentence movie reviews: Hunger Games

If my own pictures of Panem had to be sacrificed to the Hollywood beast, at least it was for a darn good movie. It is very rare that a movie adds a new and exciting direction to a book I already love, but this movie managed to do it. I think the only thing that did not come through clearly was just how hungry they all were, but other than that, the people, the costumes and the settings were all fabulous.

Three sentence movie reviews: Iron Man

This was the first movie in our “Avenger Assembly” film series where we will watch all the movies featuring Avengers characters which will culminate in the release of the Avengers on May 4. As always, Robert Downey Jr. is a perfect Iron Man, the plot is entertaining and the effects are superb. Now if only they had not cast Terrance Howard, all would have been good.

Three sentence movie reviews: The Grey

I have some pretty firm views about how wolves are in their own environment and I had to leave those views at the door to the theater as the wolves in this film don’t fit with my view. That aside, this movie’s intensity made it great fun, even if the subject was rather grim. Liam Neeson is on a run of fabulous roles, fabulously acted.

ps. Gray? Grey? Why do I always seem to choose the wrong word?

Three sentence movie reviews: My Week with Marilyn

This is one of those movies that makes me quite glad I don’t know any movie stars as they seem–as portrayed by Hollywood–incredibly exhausting, not to mention completely self-involved. I found the plot overall a bit “eh” but it was an incredibly gorgeous movie to watch: costumes, sets, actors. I think this would be a good movie for a plane ride, or a quiet night at home.

Three sentence movie reviews: The Iron Lady

I feel uneasy about portraying a powerful political woman through the lens of dementia, especially given that (as Friend Kelly observed) this will not be the way they frame the Ronald Reagan story whenever they get around to telling it. The acting is fabulous, and for that you should watch this, but the story didn’t seem to have a common thrust to carry it through. Also, Margaret Thatcher’s politics aren’t my politics, so it was at times, difficult to root for her.

Three sentence movie reviews: Flight of the Conchords Season 1

My brother recommended this series several years ago and I finally got around to watching it, even though he properly sold it to me, telling me “And there’s singing!” And he was right about how much I would enjoy it because this is a very funny TV show. Perhaps next time I will seek out his recommendations in a more timely manner.

Three sentence movie reviews: Hamlet (2000)

It was a mistake to follow along with my copy of Hamlet as I watched this movie as vast parts of the play (including, most egregiously, the scene including the famous lines “Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him, Horatio”!!!!) are not in this version of the movie. Ethan Hawk has those great brooding eyes and he made a pretty good Hamlet, but I found Julia Styles’ (and I know this was not her fault, but still) rave-inspired clothing to be overly distracting to her performance. The New York City setting worked, though I found the “corporation”rather than “country” setting to be a bit off.*

*Fun fact for Casey Affleck fans: It is Casey Affleck himself who plays Fortinbras, the eventual “winner” of it all. Though we only see his picture, never the actor himself.
