Three Sentence Movie Review: Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part II

If you’ve seen the first three, you might as well finish off the quadrilogy, right?  It provided everything one could ask for* and in a manner that keeps with the book.  I was not blown away, but did enjoy myself.**

Cost: $9.00
Where watched: McMenamin’s Baghdad Theater with Matt.

*I mean, within reason.  I could ask for Phillip Seymour Hoffman to not overdose, so he could do his final scene in this movie and not be replaced by Woody Harrelson reading a letter from him. But I know I’m not going to get that.
** I was also glad that we happened to have the last book sitting in the back of Matt’s car so that we could compare and contrast the book/movie ending.
(Also, I always pictured Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Haymitch, not Plutarch.)

  1. A local friend saw it & didn’t like it, but she hasn’t read the book, so I wasn’t sure what to think. At any rate, I’ve been reluctant to go see it because I don’t want to bawl my eyes out in the theater (not that I haven’t done it before). I’m still on the fence. May wait till it comes out on DVD.

    1. I knew what was coming, so didn’t find much of anything particularly tear-inducing. I think you might be safe. Interestingly, when I was reading parts of the ending of the book out loud to Matt I got super teary, even though I knew what was coming there too. So I think book might be sadder than movie. At least for me.

Also, the movie ending (which is the same as the book’s ending) feels incredibly gratuitous, much more so than the book ending. I feel like the the last line of the book before that “10 years in the future” part was the real ending of the book and the other part was what Suzanne Collins tacked on at the behest of her publisher. But perhaps I am wrong.

  2. I absolutely hated that 10 years in the future part! It actually made me very annoyed with the entire series! So much, that I can’t even tell you how many movies I am behind on. I also do not believe there was enough to break into a fourth movie other than trying to milk the cow more. Me being the cow!
